Etymology

The origin in uncertain.[1] Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *pog-, *peg- (“shoulder, hip, side”),[2] whence Sanskrit पक्ष (pakṣa), Latin pectus, Russian пах (pax)[3].

The sense "bale, bag" developed from a pair of bags hanging opposite each other from the sides of a horse.[1]

Usage notes

Hellenophile authors used this word post-classically as a prefix corresponding to Ancient Greek ἀντι- (anti-, “anti-, against”), e.g. հակադարձ (hakadarj) = ἀντίστροφος (antístrophos), հակակիր (hakakir) = ἀντιπαθής (antipathḗs), հակատրամատեմ (hakatramatem) = ἀντιδιαίρεσις (antidiaíresis), հակադրեմ (hakadrem) = ἀντιτίθημι (antitíthēmi).[1]
