By dissimilation from *երբայր (*erbayr), by adding a prothetic vowel to *րբայր (*rbayr), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰréh₂tēr (with regular *Dr*rD metathesis and *-t--յ- (-y-) sound change between vowels).
