From Proto-Indo-European *h₁eǵʰ-er-, from *h₁eǵʰ- (“balk, border”). Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *éźera (“lake”), Lithuanian ežià (“boundary-strip”), Latvian eža (“balk”), Russian яз (jaz, “fish weir”).
