From Proto-Indo-European *bʰer-ano-, from *bʰerH- (“to bore, pierce”), the “mouth” being perceived as a “hole, opening”; cognates include Lithuanian burnà (“mouth”), Ancient Greek φάρυγξ (phárunx, “throat”), Latin frūmen (“larynx, throat”), Old Norse barki (“throat, windpipe”), Bulgarian бърна (bǎrna, “lip”).[1][2]
