Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-uk-, from *sem- (together) and *ewk- (be accustomed, learn), whence ուսանիմ (usanim), + -ին (-in). Thus, the original meaning of the compound is “accustomed to each other” or similar. Possibly cognate with Latin uxor.[1][2]
