From Japanese 天皇 (Tennō てんのう, earlier ten'ou てんおう), from Middle Chinese 天皇 (tʰen-ɣwang) (compare Mandarin tiānhuáng 天皇), from Old Chinese 天皇 (*l̥ˁin-ɢʷˁaŋ "Heavenly Sovereign" → "Emperor"), from 天 ("Heaven") + 皇 ("sovereign").
