From Proto-Germanic *maganą, from Proto-Indo-European *mogʰ-, *magʰ-, *megʰ- (“power”). Cognate with Old Frisian muga, Middle Dutch mogen (Dutch mogen), Old High German magan (German mögen), Old Norse mega (Icelandic mega), Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌲𐌰𐌽 (magan); and more distantly with Russian мочь (močʹ), Lithuanian mėgti, Ancient Greek μῆχος (mêkhos, “contrivance”).
