līdzēt

Etymology

Formed either from the adjective līdzs (“flat”) (cf. līdzens), or from the verb līgt (“to hire, to engage; to negotiate”). The original meaning of līdzēt is reflected in līdzīgs (“alike, similar”): it was “to be similar (e.g., in size)”, from which “to be similar (at work)” > “to do the same work together” > “to help.”^[1]
