From Proto-Indo-European *kel- (to hit, strike) thence also Latvian kalt. From a parallel form of the root Proto-Indo-European *kol- in its reduced grade Proto-Indo-European [Term?] (*k ̥l-) > Proto-Baltic *kul- whence this term. Cognate with Lithuanian kùlti.[1]
