Etymology
From Ottoman Turkish گیجه (gece, “night, evening”), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (gece, “night”), from Proto-Turkic *gēče (“night, evening”). Cognate to geç (“late”) and gecikmek (“to be late”). Compare Turkic cognates such as Old Turkic 𐰛𐰃𐰲𐰀 (kéče, “evening, late in the evening”), Karakhanid [script needed] (kéčē, “night, at night”), Turkmen gīje (“night”), Yakut киэһэ (kiehe, “evening”), and Hungarian késik (“to be late”) a Turkic borrowing from the same root. Unrelated to geç- (“to pass”) which has a short /e/.
