14th century. From earlier folloa, from Vulgar Latin *foliola, diminutive of folium (leaf). Cognate with Portuguese filhó and Spanish hojuela.

  1. (cooking) A traditional Shrovetide treat prepared with eggs, flour, and either milk or broth, cooked over a frying pan greased with pork fat, or over a flat hot stone. Similar to a crêpe.
