From Middle Vietnamese chuối or chuếi (“banana”), Proto-Vietic *caːjʔ or *cɔːjʔ (“banana”). Possible cognates include Tho /caːj³/, Hung /caːj/, Muong chuổi (banana), Semai /ɟai/, Temiar /ɟai/, Jehai /ɟaj/. Also compare Proto-Tai *kluəjᶜ (“banana”), whence Thai กล้วย (glûai).
