Etymology
Originally meant "no" in early Vietnamese; this usage was replaced by không, but chẳng is still used for effect. Cognate with Muong chẳng, Nguôn chẳng. Compare Thai ช่าง (châang), Lao ຊ່າງ (sāng, “to not care”). See also chăng and chả.
