From Proto-Albanian *brina, from pre-Albanian *bʰr̥nos, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrendos ‘stag, red deer’ (compare Swedish brinde, Lithuanian bríedis, Messapic bréndon). Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *h3bhruH- '(eye-)brow', although the semantic development would be unique for this root.
