From Slavic *bělъ (white) + -a- (connecting morpheme) + Русь (Rusĭ, Ruthenia); The stem bel- is cognate with Balt- (Baltic), from Lithuanian baltas (white). Compare Belarusian Белару́сь (Bjelarúsʹ), Russian Белару́сь (Belarúsʹ), Белору́ссия (Belorússija).
