Old Armenian
Alternative forms
- -ակերտ (-akert)
Etymology
Borrowed from Iranian; compare Parthian -𐭊𐭓𐭕 (-krt /-kirt/, /-gird/), Middle Persian 𐭪𐭫𐭲 (-klt /-kirt/, /-gird/), and see there for more.[1][2][3] Found also in several wholly-borrowed terms (see in the Related terms section). The same etymon functions also as a noun կերտ (kert, “building, construction”) and a verb կերտեմ (kertem, “to make, construct”) in Armenian, but these are not attested at an early date, so Armenian words ending in -կերտ (-kert) are not genuine compounds from a synchronic point of view.[3]
Suffix
-կերտ • (-kert)
- forming words with the meaning made by or out of that which is expressed by the base word
- forming city names after the name of its founder
- Տիգրան (Tigran, “Tigranes”) + -ակերտ (-akert) → Տիգրանակերտ (Tigranakert, “Tigranakert”)
- (rare) forming words with an agentive meaning
- նկար (nkar, “embroidery”) + -ակերտ (-akert) → նկարակերտ (nkarakert, “embroiderer”)
