Originally from -ик (-ik) added to adjectives ending in -евый (-evyj) or -ево́й (-evój); later extracted out as its own suffix.

  1. Alternative form of -овик (-ovik) (used after palatalized or formerly palatalized consonants)
    бо́льше (bólʹše, “bigger”) + -еви́к (-evík) → большеви́к (bolʹševík, “Bolshevik (literally, someone in the majority)”)
    борщ (boršč, “(originally) hogweed”) + -еви́к (-evík) → борщеви́к (borščevík, “hogweed”)
    змея́ (zmejá, “snake”) + -еви́к (-evík) → змееви́к (zmejevík, “serpentine (geology)”)

Usage notes

  • For many, perhaps most, nouns ending in -евик (-evik), the base noun has a corresponding attributive adjective in -евый (-evyj) or

-ево́й (-evój), in which case an analysis of the noun as formed from the attributive adjective + -ик (-ik) is still possible, and in same cases preferred.

  • As with -ик (-ik), the suffix may be stressed, in which case it is in accent pattern b (always ending-stressed).
