Etymology

From Mandarin 函數 (hánshù, “mathematical function”),[1] itself first used in print in 1859 in Li Shanlan's Chinese translation of Elias Loomis's Elements of Analytical Geometry and of the Differential and Integral Calculus.

The Japanese reading of kansū is based on the expected Japanese on'yomi of the constituent characters.

The 関数 spelling is a replacement for the older 函数 spelling, which was rendered obsolete when the 函 character was excluded during formulation of the Tōyō kanji list.
