Etymology

Compound of 生け (ike, “making something come alive”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 生ける (ikeru, “to make something live”)) +‎ 花 (hana, “flower”).[1][2][3] The hana changes to bana as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
