Etymology
From Middle Chinese compound 描畫 (MC mˠiᴇu ɦˠuɛH, “to sketch, to depict + drawing, painting, picture”). The Japanese term uses the kan'on reading of byō for the first character, rather than the older goon of myō, suggesting a possible reborrowing or influence from a later stage or dialect of Chinese. Compare modern Min Nan 描 readings biâu, biô, with initial /b/.
