From Proto-Tai *siːᴮ (“four”), from Middle Chinese 四 (MC siɪH, “four”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b-ləj (“four”). Cognate with Tai Dam sí, Lao ສີ່ (sī), Lü ᦉᦲᧈ (ṡii1), Shan သီႇ (sìi), Thai สี่ (sìi), Zhuang seiq.
