โพธิ (“awakening; enlightenment”) + สัตว์ (sàt, “animal; being”); perhaps via Old Khmer bodhisatva, bodhīsatva, bodhisata, bovadisatva, bovadiyasatra, bodhisattva (“bodhisattva”). Compare Modern Khmer ពោធិសត្វ (poothɨhtvɑɑ); Lao ໂພທິສັດ (phō thi sat).
