From Sanskrit श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha, “best, most excellent, highest, chief”) + Pali kicca (“that which ought to be done; duty, obligation, service, attention; ceremony, performance”); equivalent to เศรษฐ + กิจ (gìt).
Cognate with Khmer សេដ្ឋកិច្ច (seetthaʾkəc), Lao ເສດຖະກິດ (sēt tha kit). Compare เศรษฐี (sèet-tǐi).
