From Middle Chinese 銀 (MC ŋˠiɪn), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ŋul ~ (d-)ŋur. Cognate with Lao ເງິນ (ngœn), Lü ᦇᦹᧃ (nguen), Shan ငိုၼ်း (ngúen), Ahom 𑜂𑜢𑜤𑜃𑜫 (nguen), Zhuang ngaenz, Saek แญ๊น.
