From Old Khmer saṃtec, saṃtac, saṃtāc, samtacc (“condition of being supreme in status and power”). Cognate with Modern Khmer សម្ដេច (sɑmdəc).

สมเด็จ • (sǒm-dèt)

The present term may be combined with พระบาท (prá-bàat) (literally "divine feet") as พระบาทสมเด็จ (prá-bàat sǒm-dèt) when used as an honorific for a monarch who has been crowned formally. As for a monarch that has not or not yet been crowned formally, he is only entitled to สมเด็จ (sǒm-dèt).
