Etymology
From Pali sappāya (“beneficial”), possibly via Middle Khmer sāpāya (“good; fit; beneficial; wholesome; healthful; pleasant; agreeable; comfortable; at ease”); compare Sanskrit सभेय (sabheya, “decent; well-behaved”). Cognate with Khmer សប្បាយ (sapbaay), Lao ສະບາຍ (sa bāi).
