From earlier holesome, from Middle English holsom, holsum, helsum, halsum, from Old English *hālsum, *hǣlsum, from Proto-Germanic *hailasamaz, equivalent to whole + -some. Cognate with Icelandic heilsamur. Compare Swedish hälsosam (“wholesome”).
