From ขัน (kǎn, “basin; bowl”) +‎ หมาก (màak, “paan”). Literally "paan bowl".

     68. Another section is as follows: When a man and wife live together, and become at variance with each other, and thus want to divorce, the woman shall return the bride price and paan bowl to the man. But if they already have a child, it is prescribed that the bride price and paan bowl need not to be returned to the man at all.
