From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀸 (majjā), from Sanskrit मज्जन् (majján, “marrow”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mazǰʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *mosgʰós. Cognate with Punjabi ਭੇਜਾ (bhejā), Gujarati ભેજું (bhejũ).
Doublet of मग़ज़ (maġaz), a borrowing from Persian.
