From Proto-Indo-Aryan *maźźʰā́, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mazǰʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *mosgʰos (“marrow”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬰𐬔𐬀 (mazga), English marrow, Lithuanian smẽgenys, Old Church Slavonic мозгъ (mozgŭ).
