Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₂iHseh₂ (“shaft”). Cognates include Ancient Greek οἴαξ (oíax, “handle of rudder, tiller, helm;”), οἰήϊον (oiḗïon, “handle of rudder”), Hittite 𒄭𒅖𒊭𒀭 (ḫi-iš-ša- /ḫišša-/, “carriage pole”).
Confer also Finnish aisa (“shaft; pole”), borrowed from Baltic, whence borrowed from Slavic s-stem (compare Slovene ojẹ̑ (“thill”), genitive ojẹ̑sa).
