لعل
Arabic
Etymology
Morphologically لَـ (la-, “truly, indeed, verily”) + عَلَّ (ʿalla).
Particle
لَعَلَّ • (laʿalla)
Usage notes
- لَعَلَّ (laʿalla) functions like إِنَّ (ʾinna) and أَنَّ (ʾanna), shifting the subject of the clause to the accusative case. The subject of the clause must immediately follow لَعَلَّ (laʿalla); if it is a pronoun, it must be expressed.
- Unlike the more common لِ (li), لِكَي (likay), and حَتَّى (ḥattā), لَعَلَّ (laʿalla) places its subordinate verb in the indicative mood, even when used to mean "in order," "so that."
