From Middle Persian swhr (suhr, “red”), from Old Persian [script needed] (θuxra, “bright”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Sanskrit शुक्र (śukra, “bright, resplendent”). Compare Parthian swxr (suxr, “red”), Ossetian сырх (syrx, “red”).
