Etymology
The origin is uncertain. Pokorny with doubt lists under the root *ḱel- (“thin shaft, stalk”), following Scheftelowitz linking the word with such cognates as Sanskrit शल (ṡalá, “staff; dart, spear”), शलल (ṡalala, “quill of a porcupine”), शिल (ṡila, “ear of corn”), Ancient Greek κῆλον (kêlon, “arrow, projectile”), Lithuanian šìlas (“coniferous forest”); -արթ (-artʿ)/-արդ (-ard) then would be a suffix. This is rejected by Ačaṙyan but accepted by J̌ahukyan.
