Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *portiyo-, from the root *per-, *por- (“to give birth”) whence also Latin pario (“bring forth, give birth”) and Old Armenian որթ (ortʿ, “calf”). Among cognates compare in particular Sanskrit पृथुक (pṛthuka, “boy; the young of any animal”), Ancient Greek πόρτις (pórtis, “bull-calf; boy”) and Latin partus (“birth; offspring”).
