Etymology

From յ- (y-) + Proto-Armenian *arm- (to bind fast, tie, fit), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂er- grown with -m, + -ար (-ar). Closest cognates are Ancient Greek ἁρμός (harmós, joint), ἁρμόζω (harmózō), Latin arma. Possibly related to արմանամ (armanam).
