The root is կուլ- (kul-), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷul- or *gʷl̥h₁-, + -ան- (-an-). Cognate with Latin gula, Proto-Slavic *glъtati, Ancient Greek δέλεαρ (délear, bait). Ընկղմեմ (Ənkłmem) may be related.
