երկին

Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

J̌ahukyan derives from Proto-Indo-European *d(i)wi-n-, from *dyew- (“to be bright; sky, heaven”), remarking that there are phonological problems and that an analogical influence of երկիր (erkir, “earth”) is possible. According to him երկաթ (erkatʿ, “iron”) is related and Proto-Georgian-Zan *rḳina- (“iron”) is borrowed from երկին (erkin).

   ցասումն երկնից ― cʿasumn erknicʿ ― the wrath of heaven

   երկինք եւ երկիր ― erkinkʿ ew erkir ― heaven and earth

   երկի՛նք, արդա՛ր երկինք ― erkínkʿ, ardár erkinkʿ ― heavens! good heavens!

   հրեղէն երկին ― hrełēn erkin ― the Empyrean
