աւազ
Old Armenian
Etymology
The origin is uncertain.
Has been compared to Latin sabulum (“gravel, sand”), Ancient Greek ψάμμος (psámmos), ἄμαθος (ámathos, “sand”) and Proto-Germanic *samdaz and derived from Proto-Indo-European *sabʰ-.[1][2]
Martirosyan proposes borrowing from Iranian; compare Sogdian 𐼰𐼰𐼴𐼵𐼷𐼷 (ʾʾwzyy /*ōwazē/), [script needed] (ʾʾwzʾk /āwaze, āwāz/, “lake, pond”), Persian آوازه (āwāze, “swamp; pool”), Old Armenian աւազան (awazan, “pool; receptacle, washing tub, watering trough, cauldron, laver, bath”) (from Iranian), with a semantic shift “swamp” → “silt” → “sand”.[3]
Compare also Mazanderani وازیک (vâzik, “sand”).
