According to J̌ahukyan, from առ (aṙ) + *եղ- (*eł-), from Proto-Indo-European *ey-el-, from the root *ei- (“pole”). Cognate with íelekstis (“shaft; pole”), Latvian ielukši (“plough shaft”), ilkss (“shaft”); Lithuanian ailė, áilis, Latvian ailis.
