Old Armenian

Etymology

Probably related to Hittite [script needed] (šalpa-), [script needed] (šalpi, dung?) and derived from Proto-Indo-European *sal-bʰo- (dirty) (the o-stem) and *sal-bʰi- (dirt, excrement) (the i-stem), from*solH- (dirt, dirty). Alternatively, the Hittite and Armenian words are from Proto-Indo-European *selpo- and cognate to Sanskrit Sanskrit सर्पिष् (sarpíṣ-, molten butter, lard), German Salbe (ointment).
