Unknown, probably from the verb ur- "to pour" (compare Khakas, Shor, Tofalar ur- "to pour"; see also Bashkir ҡоҙоҡ (qoðoq), ҡойо (qoyo, “well”), which developed from a different verb with the same meaning "to pour"), or from the verb or-/ur- "to dig" (compare Karachay-Balkar уру (“hole”)).
