Ultimately borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀτονία (atonía, “languor”), from ἄτονος (átonos, “languid”), from ἀ- (a-, “privative”) + τόνος (tónos, “accent”), from τείνειν (teínein, “to stretch”). Synchronically analyzable as а- (a-) + тон (ton) + -и́я (-íja).[1]
