From Proto-Indo-European *stratos, from the root *sterh₃- (“to spread, stretch out, extend”). Cognates include Latin strātus, Old Irish srath (“grass, grassy place”), and Sanskrit स्तृत (stṛtá-, “bestrewn”). Compare στορέννυμι (storénnumi).
