Etymology

Passive Perfect participle of πεθαίνω (pethaíno), a verb with only active forms. From Medieval Byzantine Greek πεθαμένος from stem πεθαν- with assimilation [nm > mm] and simplification of [mm > m][1]. See Ancient Greek aorist ἀπέθᾰνον (apéthanon) of ἀποθνῄσκω (apothnḗiskō).
