From Proto-Hellenic *klāwī́ds, from Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂us (nail, pin, hook - instruments, of old use for locking doors). Cognate with Latin clāvus (nail, pin), Old Church Slavonic ключь (ključĭ, key).
