From the participle of zbath, from Proto-Indo-European *bhoso-s (“naked”). Cognate to Old Church Slavonic bosъ (bosŭ), Lithuanian bãsas, Latvian bass (“barefoot”), Old High German bar, Old English bær, Old Norse berr (“naked, bare”).
