Ablauted form of Middle High German wërben, from Old High German hwerban (“to turn”), from Proto-Germanic *hwerbaną (“to turn”). Compare Dutch werven (“to recruit”), English wharve (“to turn”), Icelandic hverfa (“to turn”), Faroese hvørva (“to disappear”), German werben (“to recruit, advertise”).
