From Proto-Albanian *uell-, from Proto-Indo-European *uel-(s-) 'to tear, seize upon'[1]. Cognate to Latin vello (“to pluck, tug”)[2], Latvian veli, Lithuanian vẽlės (“the ghostly figures of the deceased”), Gothic wilwan (wilwan, “to rob”) and Hittite hullāi (“fight, struggle”).
