From Middle English unswete, from Old English unswēte (“unsweet; bitter; sour”), from Proto-Germanic *unswōtuz (“unsweet”), equivalent to un- + sweet. Cognate with West Frisian ûnswiet (“unsweet”), Dutch onzoet (“unsweet”), German Low German unsööt (“unsweet”), German unsüß (“unsweet”), Swedish osöt (“unsweet”), Icelandic ósætur (“unsweet”).
